Healthy Vegan Hot Chocolate

Vegan Hot Chocolate

Now I have always considered hot chocolate as being a bit of a treat on the weekend. Whether it be to warm me up on a cold evening or to indulge on in the middle of the day, it can always give me a little chill out moment to feel good. However I now (especially throughout winter) drink them more regularly but have found a much healthier version that you can drink more often and is completely vegan.

You Will Need
500ml of Almond Milk (or dairy free milk of choice, coconut works really well too)
2 tsp of Cacao Powder
Maple Syrup
Optional - Vegan Marshmallows

This recipe serves 1 person, but the 500ml was dependant on the size of my mug used, you could find yours is less or more.

All you need to do is heat the milk and cacao powder on a medium heat until hot. I prefer to use the hob but you can warm the milk up in a microwave too.

Raw Cacao Powder is much healthier for you than the cocoa powder you buy to make hot chocolate. Not only because of there not being any sugar but it is great for your immune system and boosting your energy levels. It is considered a super food to many so if you are on a health kick then definitely try this instead of regular cocoa powder.

You will probably find that the cacao powder on its own is too strong and this is where you can add a sweetener. I prefer to use Maple Syrup just until it is sweet enough, but you can use Agave Nectar or even Coconut Sugar if you can get your hands on it.

Lastly if I am wanting to really treat myself I will add on a layer of vegan marshmallows. These are from the brand Freedom which you can buy from Holland & Barrett and various websites online. You honestly cannot tell the difference that they are vegan they just taste like normal marshmallows and they do them in bigger sizes too.

There we have it a healthy vegan hot chocolate recipe. Simple to make and a great alternative if you wanted to indulge but are following a healthy diet. If you really wanted to treat yourself, you could even add some vegan cream too.

Are you a hot chocolate fan? Have you ever tried cacao powder before? Let me know in the comments!

Enjoy! ☺
