Banana Smoothie To Help You Sleep

Banana Smoothie To Help You Sleep

On the occasions that I know I really need to get some sleep to be feeling energised the next day, I tend to drift to making a hot cup of specialised tea that helps you sleep. But if you are not in the mood for a hot drink or simply do not like them, then this banana smoothie helps really well with making you feel sleepy.

You Will Need
2-3 Ripe Bananas (depending on the size of them)
750ml Oat Milk (or milk of choice)
7-10 Pitted Dates
1 tbsp Desiccated Coconut (optional)
1 tsp Cinnamon (optional)

I have said that I used 750ml of Oat Milk, but this was dependant on the size of my cup, so you might find you need some more. I wouldn't recommend having any less because the smoothie will be really thick and difficult to drink if you are using a straw.

Now you might find that this could give you the opposite effect and you could actually find you have a lot more energy, but everyone who I have tried this on feels tired after drinking it.

The reason why this smoothie works well for helping you sleep and hopefully getting a better nights sleep is because bananas naturally contain Magnesium which is a muscle relaxant. They also contain Serotonin and Melatonin which really help you drift off and sleep well.

Dates are also another great ingredient to have before sleep because they contain something called Tryptophan which makes you feel drowsy. The other ingredients do help too to make you feel sleepy, and I added a bit of cinnamon because it has that sort of warming cosy scent behind it too.

I use a NutriBullet, which whizzes everything together without any lumps, but a food blender works well too. I just add it all together and blend.

After blended you have a delicious smoothie to enjoy. I remember when I first tested this out in the middle of the day and 30 minutes later I needed a long afternoon nap because I felt so tired. It is quite a sweet smoothie, especially down to the dates so you only need a handful of them but the balance between the ingredients is really nice and leaves you with a coconut after taste.

If you suffer with getting some sleep, try this out to see if it makes you feel tired. It isn't probably the first thing you think of when trying to get to sleep but it helps me every time if I need to be up early but don't feel sleepy.

Let me know in the comments what your favourite smoothie flavour is?

Enjoy! and happy sleeping ☺
